Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: TNFRSF11B
Gene Name: TNFRSF11B
Protein Full Name: Tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily member
Alias: Osteoclastogenesis inhibitory factor;Osteoprotegerin
Mass (Da): 46040
Number AA: 401
UniProt ID: O00300
Locus ID: 4982
COSMIC ID: TNFRSF11B
Gene location on chromosome: 8q24.12
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: GAIN
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19718
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.47
Normal role description: TNFSF11B is involved in bone homeostasis, prevention of arterial calcification, leaukocyte adhesion and inhibiting apoptosis. It is secreted and blocks RANKL and prevents osteoclast activation. It can inhibit apoptosis by binding to TRAIL. OPG expression is incrased in advanced prostate, breast and gastric cancers and may mediate resistance to apoptosis.
