Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: EIF3F
Gene Name: EIF3F
Protein Full Name: Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3 subunit
Alias: EIF-3 epsilon; EIF3 p47 subunit; EIF3f; EIF3-p47; EIF3S5; Eukaryotic translation initiation factor 3, subunit F; IF35
Mass (Da): 37564
Number AA: 357
UniProt ID: O00303
Locus ID: 8665
COSMIC ID: EIF3F
Gene location on chromosome: 11p15.4
Cancer protein type: TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: INHIBITS
Number of cancer specimens: 20035
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.17
Normal role description: Subunit of the eukaryotic initiation factor 3 (eIF3) complex, which is essential for protein synthesis initiation. Phosphorylation of EIF3F by CDK11p46 is implicated in transcription inhibition and apoptosis. Low expression levels and loss of heterozygosity found in pancreatic cancers and melanoma. Restoration of expression was associated with increased apoptosis and decreased cell proliferation.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: No mutations have been reported on the Atlas of Genetics in Oncology. Only one mutated sample described in the SANGER COSMIC database.
