Normal role description: XRCC3 is a DNA repair protein required for repair of double strand breaks by nonhomologous end joining and repair of DNA cross-linking. XRCC3 has been found to interact with RAD51 and RAD51C to be recruited to sites of DNA damage. Mis-sense mutations in XRCC3 have been found to correlate with the development of breast cancer and malignant melanomas. In general the mutations were found to cause lower DNA repair activity. However there is a lack of consensus into associations of XRCC3 dysfunction with cancer development in the literature.
