Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: DBC1
Gene Name: DBC1
Protein Full Name: Deleted in bladder cancer protein 1
Alias: Protein FAM5A
Mass (Da): 88760
Number AA: 761
UniProt ID: O60477
Locus ID: 1620
COSMIC ID: DBC1
Gene location on chromosome: 9q32-q33
Cancer protein type: TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: LOSS
Effect of active protein on cancer: INHIBITS
Number of cancer specimens: 19690
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 1.81
Normal role description: DBC1 plays a role in inhibiting cell cycle progression; specifically, inhibiting G1 to S phase transition. This protein contains a 5' CpG island that may often be a target of hypermethylation, which may result in hypermethylation-based silencing in some bladder cancers. It is also associate with colon, ovarian, and skin tumors.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: Inhibits cell proliferation by negative regulation of the G1/S transition. Mediates cell death which is not of the classical apoptotic type and regulates expression of components of the plasminogen pathway.
