Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: BRD4
Gene Name: BRD4
Protein Full Name: Bromodomain-containing protein 4
Alias: Bromodomain containing 4; CAP; Chromosome-associated protein; HUNK1; HUNKI; MCAP
Mass (Da): 152219
Number AA: 1362
UniProt ID: O60885
Locus ID: 23476
COSMIC ID: BRD4
Gene location on chromosome: 19p13
Number of cancer specimens: 20555
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.59
Deregulated in translocations: t(15;19)(q14;p13) with NUT which produces a BRD4-NUT fusion protein is found in a rare, aggressive, and lethal carcinoma arising in midline organs of young people.
Normal role description: BRD4 associates with chromosomes during mitosis and plays role in remodeling. It also play a role in host-virus interaction, as BRD4 is required to ensure the tethering of viral genomes to the host mitotic chromosomes for persistence of viral episomes in papillomavirus-infected cells. The translocation, t(15;19)(q13;p13.1), is characteristic of an upper respiratory tract carcinoma in young people.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: Plays a role in a process governing chromosomal dynamics during mitosis. A chromosomal aberration involving BRD4 is found in a rare, aggressive, and lethal carcinoma arising in midline organs of young people. Translocation t(15;19)(q14;p13) with NUT which produces a BRD4-NUT fusion protein.
