Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: TIMP1
Gene Name: TIMP1
Protein Full Name: Metalloproteinase inhibitor 1
Alias: Erythroid-potentiating activity;Fibroblast collagenase inhibitor;Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases 1
Mass (Da): 23171
Number AA: 207
UniProt ID: P01033
Locus ID: 7076
COSMIC ID: TIMP1
Gene location on chromosome: 7076
Number of cancer specimens: 19717
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.07
Normal role description: Protease inhibitor. Complexes with metalloproteinases (such as collagenases) and irreversibly inactivates them by binding to their catalytic zinc cofactor. Also mediates erythropoiesis in vitro; but, unlike IL-3, it is species-specific, stimulating the growth and differentiation of only human and murine erythroid progenitors. Known to act on MMP-1, MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-8, MMP-9, MMP-10, MMP-11, MMP-12, MMP-13 and MMP-16. Does not act on MMP-14.
