Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: S100B
Gene Name: S100B
Protein Full Name: Protein S100-B
Alias: S-100 protein beta chain;S-100 protein subunit beta;S100 calcium-binding protein B
Mass (Da): 10713
Number AA: 92
UniProt ID: P04271
Locus ID: 6285
COSMIC ID: S100B
Gene location on chromosome: 21q22.3
Cancer protein type: UNCLEAR
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: UNCLEAR
Number of cancer specimens: 20057
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.1
Normal role description: The exact function of S100B is not fully understood, but is has been found to inhibit microtubule assembly, to be involved in cell cycle progression and differentiation, and to induce neurite extension. Over-expression and chromosomal rearrangements of the gene has been proposed to play a role in various neuro-pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease, ALS and epilapsy, as well as in melanoma proliferation.
