Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: PLA2G2A
Gene Name: PLA2G2A
Protein Full Name: Phospholipase A2, membrane associated
Alias: GIIC sPLA2;Group IIA phospholipase A2;Non-pancreatic secretory phospholipase A2;Phosphatidylcholine 2-acylhydrolase 2A
Mass (Da): 16083
Number AA: 144
UniProt ID: P14555
Locus ID: 5320
COSMIC ID: PLA2G2A
Gene location on chromosome: 1p36.13
Cancer protein type: TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: LOSS
Effect of active protein on cancer: INHIBITS
Number of cancer specimens: 19717
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.12
Normal role description: This phospholipase participates in the regulation of the phospholipid metabolism in biomembranes including eicosanoid biosynthesis. Catalyzes the calcium-dependent hydrolysis of the 2-acyl groups in 3-sn-phosphoglycerides. Expression positively correlates with prognosis in gastric, colorectal, and pancreatic cancer. Similarly, downregulation in prostate cancer has been observed.
