Normal role description: Cyclin B1 is a nuclear cyclin-dependent protein kinase activator. It is essential for the control of the cell cycle at the G2/M (mitosis) transition. It complexes with CDC2 to form the maturation-promoting factor. An alternate transcript, one that is constitutively expressed, stems from an alternate transcription initiation site. Strong cytoplasmic antibody staining in a small fraction of malignant cells was found in most malignancies and overexpression has been associated with many cancers, suggesting an oncogenic role.
