Normal role description: Elastin is a major structural protein along with fibrillin which composes the extracellular elastic fiber matrix found in blood vessels, lung, skin and other elastic tissues. Elastin is composed primarily of hydrophobic amino acids, glycine, valine, alanine, and proline and is crosslinked through lysine residues to form the elastic fiber matrix. Elastin has a role in regulating smooth muscle proliferation in the development of new blood vessels. Elastin's role in cancer development has not been well studied but is speculated to be involved in promoting angiogenesis to support tumour growth.
