Normal role description: EGR1 is an early response transcriptional regulator. It recognizes and binds to the DNA sequence 5'-CGCCCCCGC-3'(EGR-site) and activates the transcription of target genes whose products are required for mitogenesis and differentiation. It is involved in the regulation of neuronal activity and plasticity, tissue repair, wound healing, liver regeneration, atherosclerosis, angiogenesis, fibrosis, and other inflammation/stress-related responses. It may function both as an oncogene or a tumour suppressor depending on the situation.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: Only 1 ovarian sample was included in Sanger COSMIC.
