Normal role description: | KITLG is a ligand for the c-KIT receptors which can activate downstream phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and MAPK signalling pathways. Binding of KITLG to the c-KIT receptor activates hematopoiesis, cell proliferation, stem cell maintenance and cell migration. KITLG has a membrane bound and soluble form which have different biological activities can both activate c-KIT receptors by inducing receptor dimerization. KITLG has a role in cancer development in gynecological tumours and small-cell lung cancers. Increased expression of both KITLG and c-KIT receptor have been observed in these cancer types and is suggested to be contribute to cancer through an autocrine mechanism. |
