Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: MCM5

Alias: CDC46; CDC46 homologue; DNA replication licensing factor MCM5; Minichromosome maintenance complex component 5
Mass (Da): 82286
Number AA: 734
UniProt ID: P33992
Locus ID: 4174
COSMIC ID: MCM5
Gene location on chromosome: 22q13.1
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: GAIN
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19719
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.52
Normal role description: Chromatin binding protein, that is a component of the MCM complex in DNA replication initiation. The MCM complex also serves as helicase. MCM5, MCM3 and MCM2 negatively regulate the active MCM core subunits. MCM5 may actively regulate cell cycle control. Co-localizes with RNA polymerase II, on chromatin of genes being constitutively transcribed, and is required for transcription elongation of RNA Pol II. Overexpression in human cancers.
