Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: CAPG
Gene Name: CAPG
Protein Full Name: Macrophage-capping protein
Alias: Actin regulatory protein CAP-G
Mass (Da): 38518
Number AA: 348
UniProt ID: P40121
Locus ID: 822
COSMIC ID: CAPG
Gene location on chromosome: 2p11.2
Cancer protein type: OP/TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: UNCLEAR
Number of cancer specimens: 19695
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.27
Normal role description: CAPG caps barbed ends of actin filaments reversibly in a calcium dependet manner and thereby regulates cell motility. Overexpression of CAPG is associated with cancer cell motility and tumour dissemination in breast, ovarian and pancreatic cancers, oral squamous-cell carcinoma and ocular melanoma. Loss of CAPG in several cancer cell lines however gives strong evidence of a tumour suppressing function of CAPG.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: No transforming mutations were identified in the Atlas of Gene Oncology, the Sanger COSMIC database, or Uniprot. Loss of expression and overexpression however were associated with various cancer types.
