Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: NNMT
Gene Name: NNMT
Protein Full Name: Nicotinamide N-methyltransferase
Mass (Da): 29574
Number AA: 264
UniProt ID: P40261
Locus ID: 4837
COSMIC ID: NNMT
Gene location on chromosome: 11q23.2
Cancer protein type: OP/?TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19625
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.37
Normal role description: Metabolic enzyme. Catalyzes the N-methylation of nicotinamide and other pyridines to form pyridinium ions. This activity is important for biotransformation of many drugs and xenobiotic compounds. Implicated in the folate pathway. Upregulated in many tumour cell lines, likely related to increased metabolic demands of cancer cells. Of note, certain tumors that metastasize will downregulate this gene.
