Normal role description: | SLC26A3 is a chloride/bicarbonate exchanger expressed primarily in the colon. SLC26A3 is involved in the absorption of chloride in exchange for bicarbonate. Helps mediate electrolyte and fluid absorption whereby dysfunction of SLC26A3 have been associated with congenital chloride diarrhea. SLC26A3 may have a role as a tumour suppressor protein as downregulation of SLC26A3 was observed in adenocarcinomas of colon tissue. It has been speculated that loss of SLC26A3 enhances DNA synthesis due to intracellular alkalinization. |
