Normal role description: RGS2 functions as a regulator of G protein signalling by acting as GTPase activating protein for the α subunit of heterotrimeric G proteins (Gi, Go and Gq). RGS2 acts as a mediator of myeloid differentiation and may play a role in leukemogenesis. It is also involved in the negative feedback control pathway for adenylyl cyclase signalling, and has been found to bind EIF2B5 and to block its activity, hence leading to inhibition of the translation of mRNA into protein. The gene has been found to be either up- or down-regulated in a number of cancers, but no causal relationships between it and cancer development have been found.
