Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: PLA2G4A
Gene Name: PLA2G4A
Protein Full Name: Cytosolic phospholipase A2

Mass (Da): 85211
Number AA: 749
UniProt ID: P47712
Locus ID: 5321
COSMIC ID: PLA2G4A
Gene location on chromosome: 1q31.1
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 20212
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.93
Normal role description: This phospholipase is activated by increases in intracellular calcium. It generates free-fatty acids such as arachidonic acid by cleaving phosphatidylcholine. These are all considered second and third messengers in cellular signalling. Upregulation of PLA2G4A has been demonstrated in many cancer systems. Oncogenesis mediated through increased COX-2 angiogenesis, PPARdelta signalling, and PGE2 signalling.
