Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: NOV
Gene Name: NOV
Protein Full Name: Protein NOV homolog
Alias: CCN family member 3;Insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 9;Nephroblastoma-overexpressed gene protein homolog
Mass (Da): 39162
Number AA: 357
UniProt ID: P48745; B3FHX2
Locus ID: 4856
COSMIC ID: NOV
Gene location on chromosome: Xq28
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19805
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.43
Deregulated by viral insertion: Avian leukosis virus - Chicken
Normal role description: NOV is small secreted cysteine-rich regulatory protein associated with the extracellular matrix and plays an important role in cell growth regulation and in the development of the cardiovascular and skeletal system, fibrosis and cancer. The gene was first identified in myeloblastosis-associated virus-1-induced avian nephroblastoma and later found to have sequence homologous expressed in normal human hematopoietic cells and in nephroblastoma.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: 1/101 kidney samples was also mutated (Sanger COSMIC)
