Normal role description: | RBM5 is an RNA-binding protein found to be a component of the spliceosome A complex required for regulating alternative splicing of transcribed mRNA. RBM5 is thought to have a role in regulating apoptosis as a tumour suppressor protein. Fas-mediated apoptosis was prevented in RBM5 knockdown models. RBM5 expression can be correlated with increased expression of tumour suppressor genes, Stat5b, annexin I, BMP5 while downregulating oncogenes Pim-1, ITPA and AIB1. Downregulation of RBM5 is observed in breast cancer, human schwannomas and lung cancer, and has been identified as a gene marker for highly metastatic solid tumours. Mutations in RBM5 are rarely observed however in cancer. |
