Normal role description: | SLC16A1 is a proton gradient linked transporter - for monooxylates.Catalyzes the rapid transport across the plasma membrane of many monocarboxylates such as lactate, pyruvate, branched-chain oxo acids derived from leucine, valine and isoleucine, and the ketone bodies acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetate. SLC16A1 has been found to be upregulated in many different cancers including glial, colorectal, lung, cervival and breast carcinomas. However it was also been found to be silenced or downregulated in some breast and colorectal cancers. Few mutations of SLC16A1 have been detected in cancer and its role in mediating cancer development is still unclear. |
