Normal role description: | CASP9 is an aspartic acid protease involved in the pro-apoptotic caspase cascade responsible for programmed cell death. Activation of CASP9 occurs through cleavage by caspase APAF1. CASP9 is ubiquitously expressed with the highest levels of expression in the heart. Mutations in the promoter region of the CASP9 locus is associated with increased risk of lung, colon and gastric cancers. Decreased activity of CASP9 results in inhibition of apoptosis a increased longevity of cancer cells. |
