Gene undergoes hypermethylation: The promoter region of CDH13 has been observed to be hypermethylated leading to silencing of CDH13 in breast, lung, colorectal, skin, ovary and chronic myeloid leukmia cancers.
Normal role description: CDH13 is a member of the cadherin family of proteins. CDH13 is localized to the outer membrane of cells and thought to be restricted to lipid rafts. Rather than being anchored by a transmembrane domain CDH13 is anchored through a Glycophosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor. Unlike canonical cadherins, CDH13 does not function in cell-cell adhesion and is thought to function in intracellular signal transduction. CDH13 appears to play a dual role in cancer development. Through its association with the adiponectin receptor, CDH13 may aid in sequestering growth factors required for tumour growth in vascular endothelial cells. However, in various malignant tumours CDH13 silencing by hypermethylation of the promoter region has been observed. The exact mechanism of its tumour suppression function is stil unclear.
