Normal role description: | SATB1 is a matrix protein that binds nuclear matrix and scaffold-associating DNAs through a unique nuclear architecture. It is responsible for recruiting chromatin-remodelling factors such as HDACs and HATs to regulate chromatin structure and gene expression. It also functions as an essential transcription repressor and silencing factor contributing to the initiation of X-inactivation mediated by Xist RNA that occurs during embryogenesis and in lymphomas, and is required for the switching and regulation of fetal globins during erythroid differentiation. It delineates specific epigenetic modifications at target gene loci, directly upregulating metastasis-associated genes while downregulating tumor-suppressor genes, and has been found to reprogram chromatin organization and the transcription profiles of breast tumors to promote growth and metastasis. |
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: | Only 1 ovarian tumour sample was included in Sanger COSMIC; 1 pharyngeal tumour sample was also mutated (silent mutation) |
