Normal role description: | MUC2 is the mucin layer that coats the Gastroinestinal tract, airways and other mucosal surfaces. It provides lubrication and protection from external particles and pathogens at the mucosal surface. Loss of MUC2 increases risk of oncogenesis by lack of protecting against bacteria or particles with pro-oncogenic properties, or disrupting signalling within epithelial cells that require MUC2 for proliferation and differentiation. |
