Normal role description: | eIF4G1 is a component of the EIF4F complex which recruits mRNA to ribosomes to initiate translation. eIF4G1 functions primarily as a scaffold to recruit subunits of the complex and maintain complex integrity. eIF4G1 can also interact with poly(A)-binding protein to mediate circularization of mRNA during translation. Amplification of eIF4G1 has been observed in squamous cell lung carcinomas, while silencing of eIF4G1 in breast cancers have reduced tumorigenic potential in a breast cancer cell line. eIF4G1 overexpression may be a mechanism required for cancer development as protein translation is required for cell growth and proliferation. |
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: | Less than 3% mutation in CNS and lung. |
