Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: TFF3
Gene Name: TFF3
Protein Full Name: Trefoil factor 3
Alias: Intestinal trefoil factor;Polypeptide P1.B
Mass (Da): 8641
Number AA: 80
UniProt ID: Q07654
Locus ID: 7033
COSMIC ID: TFF3
Gene location on chromosome: 21q22.3
Cancer protein type: OP/TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: MIXED
Number of cancer specimens: 19625
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.07
Normal role description: TFF3 is a secreted protein that plays a role in the maintenance and repair of the intestinal mucosa, and promotes the mobility of epithelial cells in healing processes. Highly invasive colon cancer tumour cells have shown significant down-regulation of TFF3 expression, suggesting it may play a protective role in colon carcinogenesis, but it has also been found to be up-regulated in other types of cancers such as endometrial- and prostate cancer, suggesting the opposite for those tissues.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: 1/1 laryngeal sample was also mutated (mis-sense). Only 1 laryngeal- and 1 skin cancer sample were included in Sanger COSMIC
