Normal role description: | BNIP3 plays a role in necrosis-like apoptosis and autophagy. It is induced by hypoxia via HIF-1. Its function leads to opening of mitochondrial permeablility transition pore resulting loss of proton electrochemical gradient and inducin apoptosis. Apoptosis can occur in the presence of Bcl-2, a suppressor of apoptosis. Other roles include repartitioning of calcium within the cell. |
