Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: BNIP3
Gene Name: BNIP3
Protein Full Name: BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa protein-interacting pro
Mass (Da): 21541
Number AA: 194
UniProt ID: Q12983
Locus ID: 664
COSMIC ID: BNIP3
Gene location on chromosome: 10q26.3
Cancer protein type: TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: LOSS
Effect of active protein on cancer: INHIBITS
Number of cancer specimens: 19719
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.18
Normal role description: BNIP3 plays a role in necrosis-like apoptosis and autophagy. It is induced by hypoxia via HIF-1. Its function leads to opening of mitochondrial permeablility transition pore resulting loss of proton electrochemical gradient and inducin apoptosis. Apoptosis can occur in the presence of Bcl-2, a suppressor of apoptosis. Other roles include repartitioning of calcium within the cell.
