Normal role description: | MTA1 may play a role in gene expression regulation by covalently modify histone proteins, altering chromatin structure and controlling transcription. One isoform ('Long') of the gene functions as a co-repressor of the estrogen receptor, and the other isoform ('Short') binds to and sequesters the receptor in the cytoplasm, thus enhancing non-genomic responses of ER. It was first identified in a screen for genes expressed in metastatic cells, and the expression of the gene has been correlated with the metastatic potential of at least two types of carcinomas. However, its exact role in metastasis remains unclear. |
