Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.42
Found in amplified chromosomal regions in human cancers: squamous cell carcinomas of the esophagus and uterine cervix.
Normal role description: BIRC2 is a widely expressed suppressor of apoptosis in cells. This protein will inhibit pro-apoptotic proteins such as tumour necrosis factor receptor-associated factors (TRAF), RIP1 and Smac/DIABLO leading to their subsequent ubiquitination and degradation. Overexpression of BIRC2 by amplification has been observed in cancers of the esophagus and uterine cervix. Cell lines from these cancer types have shown resisntance to radiation-induced cell death compared to wild-type controls.
