Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: BOP1
Gene Name: BOP1
Protein Full Name: Ribosome biogenesis protein BOP1
Alias: Block of proliferation 1; Block of proliferation 1 protein; KIAA0124
Mass (Da): 83630
Number AA: 746
UniProt ID: Q14137
Locus ID: 23246
COSMIC ID: BOP1
Gene location on chromosome: 8q24.3
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR

Found in amplified chromosomal regions in human cancers: Colorectal cancers (39%); (22/56); atlasgeneticsoncology.org
Normal role description: BOP1 is WD40 repeat containing protein localized to the nucleus. It fuctions in ribosome biogenesis by promoting the maturation of 25S and 5.8S rRNAs as well as chromosome segregation. Overexpression of BOP1 results in multipolar spindles which may lead to aberrant segregation of chromosomes and aneuploidy. Aberrant expression of BOP1 has been has been implicated in colorectal cancer.
