Normal role description: STARD3 is a lipid transfer protein that binds and transports intracellular cholesterol for exporting. It may also promote steroidogenesis in the placenta and brain. A 17q11-q21 amplification is found in 25% of breast cancers and is associated with poor prognoses, but its role in oncogenesis is unknown.
