Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: SSX1
Gene Name: SSX1
Protein Full Name: Protein SSX1
Alias: Cancer/testis antigen 5.1; Cancer/testis antigen family 5, member 1; CT5.1; SSRC; Synovial sarcoma, X breakpoint 1
Mass (Da): 21930
Number AA: 188
UniProt ID: Q16384
Locus ID: 6756
COSMIC ID: SSX1
Gene location on chromosome: Xp11.23
Number of cancer specimens: 20145
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.22
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: Could act as a modulator of transcription. Note, a chromosomal aberration involving SSX1 may be a cause of synovial sarcoma. Translocation t(X;18)(p11.2;q11.2). The translocation is specifically found in more than 80% of synovial sarcoma. The fusion products SSXT-SSX1 or SSXT-SSX2 are probably responsible for transforming activity.
