Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: AGPAT9
Gene Name: AGPAT9
Protein Full Name: Glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase 3
Alias: EC 2.3.1.51; HGPAT3; Lpaat-theta; Lung cancer metastasis-associated protein 1; Lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase theta; MAG1; MAG-1; PLCH
Mass (Da): 48705
Number AA: 434
UniProt ID: Q53EU6
Locus ID: 84803
COSMIC ID: AGPAT9
Gene location on chromosome: 4q21.23
Cancer protein type: UNCLEAR
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19625
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.39
Normal role description: AGPAT9 converts gylcerol-3-phosphate to lysophosphatidic acid for gylcolipid biosynthesis. This reaction is an essential initial step for de novo synthesis of triacylglycerides. This is overexpressed in many cancers leading to altered glycolipid synthesis which can alter cell signalling in favor of cancer progression.
