Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

General distribution of mutations: Multi-site
Location of most mutations: Wide range of points mutations, without complex mutations, insertions or deletions, across the full length of the protein.
Normal role description: MUC17 is a membrane glycoprotein with highly conserved homology through species. It is expressed on intestinal mucosal surfaces and upregulated in response to NF-kB signalling. Similarly, MUC17 is aberrantly expressed in pancreatic adenocarcinomas as compared to no expression in the normal pancreas or benign pancreatitis. Mechanism of oncogenesis unclear - may reflect loss of differentiation or phenotypic transformation of certain tumour cells.
