Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Alias: Zinc finger and BTB domain-containing protein 33
Mass (Da): 74484
Number AA: 672
UniProt ID: Q86T24
Locus ID: 10009
COSMIC ID: ZBTB33
Gene location on chromosome: Xq24
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19625
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.64
Normal role description: Via its zinc finger domain, Kaiso binds DNA and functions as both a repressor and activator of transcription. Kaiso recognizes methylated CpG dinucleotides as well as a sequence-specific site (TCCTGCNA). As such, ultimate role in oncogenesis will depend on which genes are upregulated or suppressed. However, empirically, Kaiso has been demonstrated to block transcription of TSP and upregulation of Kaiso appears to promote oncogenesis.
