Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: CACNA2D3
Gene Name: CACNA2D3
Protein Full Name: Voltage-dependent calcium channel subunit alpha-2/
Alias: Voltage-gated calcium channel subunit alpha-2/delta-3
Mass (Da): 123011
Number AA: 1091
UniProt ID: Q8IZS8
Locus ID: 55799
COSMIC ID: CACNA2D3
Gene location on chromosome: 3p21.1
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: GAIN
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19672
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 1.44
Normal role description: This gene functions as a voltage-gated calcium channel subunit and member of the alpha-2/delta subunit family. Increases in intracellular calcium levels can indirectly activate Ras, thus certain mutations in this subunit may increase channel activity, thus making it a oncoprotein. This is consistent with CACNA2D3 expression found in most adult tumors.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: The alpha-2/delta subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels regulates calcium current density and activation/inactivation kinetics of the calcium channel. Acts as a regulatory subunit for P/Q-type calcium channel (CACNA1A), N-type (CACNA1B), L-type (CACNA1C OR CACNA1D) but not T-type (CACNA1G)
