Normal role description: | This gene functions as a voltage-gated calcium channel subunit and member of the alpha-2/delta subunit family. Increases in intracellular calcium levels can indirectly activate Ras, thus certain mutations in this subunit may increase channel activity, thus making it a oncoprotein. This is consistent with CACNA2D3 expression found in most adult tumors. |
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: | The alpha-2/delta subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels regulates calcium current density and activation/inactivation kinetics of the calcium channel. Acts as a regulatory subunit for P/Q-type calcium channel (CACNA1A), N-type (CACNA1B), L-type (CACNA1C OR CACNA1D) but not T-type (CACNA1G) |
