Normal role description: | Stress response gene which is upregulated by homocysteine and hypoxia. NDRG1 is a metastasis suppressor gene that is downregulated in prostate, colon and breast cancers, whereas it is upregulated during colon epithelial cell differentiation and in other tumors. Regulated by hormones (androgens and estradiol). It is necessary but not sufficient for p53/TP53-mediated caspase activation and apoptosis. Positively regulated by PTEN. C-myc and N-myc downregulate NDRG1 expression by directly binding to the promotor. Plays a role in cell and lipid trafficking. |
