Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: KLK6
Gene Name: KLK6
Protein Full Name: Kallikrein-6
Alias: Neurosin;Protease M;SP59;Serine protease 18;Serine protease 9;Zyme
Mass (Da): 26856
Number AA: 244
UniProt ID: Q92876
Locus ID: 5653
COSMIC ID: KLK6
Gene location on chromosome: 19q13.3
Number of cancer specimens: 19718
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.34
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: Serine protease which exhibits a preference for Arg over Lys in the substrate P1 position and for Ser or Pro in the P2 position. Shows activity against amyloid precursor protein, myelin basic protein, gelatin, casein and extracellular matrix proteins such as fibronectin, laminin, vitronectin and collagen. Degrades alpha-synuclein and prevents its polymerization, indicating that it may be involved in the pathogenesis of Parkinson disease and other synucleinopathies. May be involved in regulation of axon outgrowth following spinal cord injury. Tumor cells treated with a neutralizing KLK6 antibody migrate less than control cells, suggesting a role in invasion and metastasis.
