Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: BAD
Gene Name: BAD
Protein Full Name: Bcl2 antagonist of cell death
Alias: BBC2; BBC6; Bcl- XL/Bcl-2 associated death promoter; Bcl-2 binding component 6; Bcl2-antagonist of cell death; BCL2-associated agonist of cell death; BCL2L8; Bcl-2-like 8 protein; Bcl-xL/Bcl-2 associated death promoter
Mass (Da): 18392
Number AA: 168
UniProt ID: Q92934
Locus ID: 572
COSMIC ID: BAD
Gene location on chromosome: 11q13.1
Cancer protein type: TSP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: LOSS
Effect of active protein on cancer: INHIBITS
Number of cancer specimens: 20338
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.09
Normal role description: Bcl protein - proapoptic. When dephosphorylated and in its active form, Bad primarily binds to Bcl-X, and to a lesser extend to Bcl-2 and Bcl-W, thereby inhibiting their antiapoptotic function. Phosphorylted Bad binds to 14-3-3 proteins and is inactivated. Proteins that phosphorylate Bad involve PKA, AKT/PKB and RAF1.
