Normal role description: | NEIL1 is a DNA glycosylase enzyme involved in removing a damaged nucleobases in DNA to initiate the base excision repair mechanism for damaged DNA. NEIL1 also possesses apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) lyase activity to introduce a DNA strand break which classifies NEIL1 as a bifunctional glycosylase. Mutations leading to decreased activity or reduced expression of NEIL1 has been implicated in the development of some gastric cancers. NEIL1 can be classified as a tumour suppressor protein. |
