Normal role description: | MUC4 is an integral membrane glycoprotein found on the cell surface, although secreted isoforms also exist. It provides lubrication, moisturization, and protection to the epithelial surfaces by trapping foreign particles and preventing them gaining access into the cells. It plays an important role in the protection, differentiation, and renewal of epithelial cells by inducing phosphorylation of ErbB2. It may play a role in tumour progression and growth by repressing apoptosis, and it also has anti-adhesive properties. |
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: | 1 pharyngeal sample was also mutated (mis-sense) |
