Normal role description: | eIF3C is a translation initiation factor required for protein synthesis. eIF3C associates with the 40S ribosome and is required for recruitment of other translation initiation factors to form the pre-initiation complex which scans the coding mRNA strand to recognize the AUG start codon. eIF3C is also required for disassembly of the ribosome upon completion of translation and also regulates premature initiation by inhibiting the joining of 40S and 60S ribosomal subunits prior to initiation. eIF3c is an oncogene and overexpression has been observed in testicular tumors and meningiomas. eIF3C overexpression may be a mechanism required for cancer development as protein translation is required for cell growth and proliferation. |
