Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: EPC1
Gene Name: EPC1
Protein Full Name: Enhancer of polycomb homolog 1
Alias: Epl1
Mass (Da): 93463
Number AA: 836
UniProt ID: Q9H2F5
Locus ID: 80314
COSMIC ID: EPC1
Gene location on chromosome: 10p11.22
Cancer protein type: UNCLEAR
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: UNCLEAR
Number of cancer specimens: 19652
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.69
Normal role description: EPC1 is a component of the HAT complex, which is involved in transcriptional activation by acetylation of nucleosomal histones H4 and H2A. leading to altered nucleosome - DNA interactions and promotion of histone-protein interaction, which positively regulate transcription. The HAT complex may also be involved in regulation of oncogene mediated growth induction; tumour suppressor mediated growth arrest and replicative senescence; apoptosis; and DNA repair. Together with RFP, EPC1 functions as a transcriptional repressor.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: 1/44 CNS samples was also mutated (Sanger COSMIC)
