Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: WFDC1
Gene Name: WFDC1
Protein Full Name: WAP four-disulfide core domain protein 1
Alias: Prostate stromal protein ps20;ps20 growth inhibitor
Mass (Da): 23977
Number AA: 220
UniProt ID: Q9HC57
Locus ID: 58189
COSMIC ID: WFDC1
Gene location on chromosome: 16q24.1
Cancer protein type: UNCLEAR
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: UNCLEAR
Number of cancer specimens: 19688
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.16
Normal role description: May act as a protease inhibitor and contribute to tissue homeostasis. In vitro studies showed that WFDC1 stimulates endothelial cell migration, and promotes angiogenesis and tumour growth in a xenograft model of prostate cancer. Due to its chromosomal location and frequent loss in cancer, it was suggested to be a tumour suppressor.
