Normal role description: | RTN4 functions as negative regulator of axon-axon adhesion and growth. Its also regulates neurite fasciculation, branching, and extension in the developing nervous system. One of RTN4 isoforms reduces the anti-apoptotic activity of Bcl-xl and Bcl-2. Overexpression of this gene has been implicated in inducing apoptosis. Mutations in this gene are associated with a variety of cancers. Downregulation of RTN4 has been observed in lung and blood cancers, while upregulation has been seen in astrocytomas. Knocking out this gene in mice results in increased tumour foration. |
