Normal role description: | RNF7 is a highly conserved ring-finger protein. It is an essential subunit of the SKP1-cullin/CDC53-F box ubiquitin ligase that functions as part of the protein degradation machinery involved in regulating cell-cyle protein turnover, and thus cell-cyle progression. Phosporylation of RNF7 by casein kinases II (CKII) leads to the degradation of p27Kip1 -- an inhibitor of cell-cycle progression -- implicating it as a possible tumour suppressor; however, upregulation of this gene has been found in lung and colon cancer, and expression levels negatively correlates with prognosis. |
