Normal role description: DMBT1 may play roles in mucosal defense system, cellular immune defense and epithelial differentiation, and also liver regeneration. It is required for terminal differentiation of columnar epithelial cells during embryonic development. Studies have suggested that rather than being a classical tumour suppressor gene via inhibition of proliferation, it may play a role in the interaction between tumour cells and the immune system. Defects in DMBT1 such as homozygous deletions have been associated with glioma and medulloblastoma. Other roles it may have include 1) opsonin receptor for SFTPD and SPAR in macrophages; 2) regulation of taste sensation; 3) inhibition and/or facilitation of HIV-1 transmission; defense against bacterial pathogens; 4) exocytosis and actin remodeling; 5) secretion of pancreatic zymogens.
