Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Effect of active protein on cancer: INHIBITS
Number of cancer specimens: 19625
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.48
Gene undergoes hypermethylation: Promoter hypermethylation in human non-small-cell lung carcinomas (2%).
Normal role description: DMTF1 is a transcription factor which activates the ARF-p53 signalling pathway to cause growth arrest or induce apoptosis. DMTF1 is activated in response to Ras-Raf signalling and is regulated by the D-cyclins. DMTF1 thereby acts primarily as a tumour suppressor protein. Loss of heterozygosity for the DMTF1 gene results in the development of lung cancers and leukemias in human and mouse models.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: Less than 3% mutation in CNS.
