Cancer Protein Description

This report provides a detailed description of a selected cancer protein with information collected from various sources, including UniProt, the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute’s Catalogue of Somatic Mutations in Cancer (COSMIC), and the Atlas of Genetics and Cytogenetics in Oncology and Haematology.

Protein Name: APOBEC2
Gene Name: APOBEC2
Mass (Da): 25703
Number AA: 224
UniProt ID: Q9Y235
Locus ID: 10930
COSMIC ID: APOBEC2
Gene location on chromosome: 6p21
Cancer protein type: OP
Effect of cancer mutation on protein: UNCLEAR
Effect of active protein on cancer: PROMOTES
Number of cancer specimens: 19717
Percent of cancer specimens with mutations: 0.25
Normal role description: APOBEC2 may be involved in epigenetic regulation via DNA methylation. It was suggested to be a member of the C -> U editing enzyme subfamily of he cytidine deaminase supergene family. However it does not show any detectable apolipoprotein B mRNA editing, but low intrinsic deaminase activity. APOBEC2 expression was shown to be upregulated in response to proinflammatory cytokines in hepatocytes and might facilitate hepatocellular carcinoma.
Commentary on involvement of protein in cancer: No transforming mutations were identified in the Atlas of Gene Oncology, the Sanger COSMIC database, or Uniprot for this gene.
